A B&M Short shifter reduces the distance your hand needs to move to engage the next gear, so it reduces the amount of time spent shifting, resulting in improved performance. A common misconception is that a short shifter is just a chopped version of a regular shifter. In fact, chopping your shifter will not effect the angle your shifter travels and thus have no improvement in performance.
You will have to get a true short throw shifter, like those from B&M or Neuspeed, to get the true short throw effect. Your goal will be to reduce the angle that the shifter shaft travels through during its stroke between gears. By reducing the angle, you hand travels much less. Also you will have a sportier look and feel.
